http://www.streetfire.net The first-ever turbo diesel trophy truck was entered by Volkswagen in this year's Baja 1000. Put to the test in a grueling 635 mile course, the 500 HP TDI Touareg earned it's stripes as one of the SCORE off-road series' most exciting new technologies.
@sirhcskoorb I'm no baja expert but are you sure they use VW engines in the buggies, i doubt.VW is not a name in racing, they wanted to prove to americans TDi is reliable and fast and sell that SUV, it's very good price, performance and economy.Of course american 10 litre, V8, gas, naturally aspired wins over TDi anyday.Huge displacement provide the power, simplicity provide reliability and control.Just one problem, gas price.

its technologies and electronics that break beyond that vw's r still tough well made cars.

@12valvepower1 That doesn't surprise me.
It's a slower more technical race.
It's by no means easy and VW should be proud of their wins.
But remember these vehicles are one offs built for the race they are run in.
I have a 22 year old Chevy pick up that I can load with a 1,500-2,000lbs of cargo,extra fuel and drive either the Baja or Dakar course with the a/c on.
The VW people would look down on my truck even though it's is far tougher and more capable than their products.
They don't get it

I have a VW TDI car that my wife drives and it's a good little car, but VW doesn't understand trucks and SUVs.
They didn't win and there isa good reason why, the Germans over engineer the hell out of everything.
The air cooled VW engines run in the buggies are great but anything they produced in the past 50 years will (and does) brake out there.
The European idea that complicated = sophisticated = better is just wrong.
They look down on the stuff that wins out there as being crude.

Yea that shit can break though. Lockers can take more abuse that that system.
