Astronauts James McDivitt, Dave Scott and Rusty Schweickart launched in March 1969 with lunar module Spider and command module Gumdrop. Their mission: put the lunar module through its paces in Earth orbit.

Forty years ago, Apollo 9 became the first manned flight of the command service module along with the lunar module. The three-person crew of Jim McDivitt, Rusty Schweickart and Dave Scott conducted several tests critical to landing on the moon, including the lunar modules engine, backpack life support systems, navigation systems and docking maneuvers. The mission was the second manned launch of a Saturn V rocket and was the third manned mission of the Apollo program.
