When a dog dies,
does its ghost haunt its grave -- if it has one?
Grave, that is.
A place where it's laid down to rest.

To be a ghost,
you must at first have had a soul.
So, I guess what I ask is:
Do dogs have a soul?

They do if people do.
So do pigs, and birds, and ants,
and bugs so small they can't be seen.

And what of plants?
Each nut, each seed, is life.
An egg. A germ.

All things that live have got a soul -- or none.
Soul is life, life is soul.
Two words for the same thing.

But ghost?
Do souls stay, when life has gone,
and there's but a corpse that moves no more?
Flesh that rots,
bones that crack and turn to dust.

Where does life go,
when flesh turns to soil?

If what makes us move
is not the same as that which moves,
then life doesn't stop when legs do.
The soul moves on.

I tell you:
The ghosts of dead dogs bark at their graves.
If you try hard,
if you be still,
and make no noise of your own,
you can hear it.

A video filmed poem. I call it a syllable poem, because it consists of only one-syllable words. The dog's name is Max. It is still very much alive :)

  • Y post this it's sad

  • @SuperJaedyn It might be sad, but it seems many people find it consoling.

  • It is sad that such a perfect companion to the human has evolved in such a way, that it has a very limited life span in comparison. Maybe in the distant future when humans have god like powers that could be changed ^^, or find a practical way to move the dog forward in time while you are not with it :)

  • @mattymuck, I think your idea is brilliant - let's hope that dogs will get the lifetime of humans, so that we become companions for life. I think it will happen.

  • I disagree why do all things have to have a soul ?? or all things have to have no soul??

WHY CANT SOME THINGS HAVE A SOUL AND OTHERS DONT. this is a complex and you shouldnt pretend to know how it works.

  • After my jack russel terrier died at the vets of cancer, I was sitting i my bedroom alone sad that night and I was startled when I suddenly I heard her bark [just once] in the room as plain as as can be,and i Know It was her because I recognized her bark.I felt it was like she said I'm ok now !

  • every living thing has a soul,so you wrote a poem and recite it on here. your voice is quite creepy, just right for this type of poem :-)
