A drivers-eye view of the railway line passing through Wymondham Station, now home of The Brief Encounter Restaurant.
Filmed from the front cab of a DMU (diesel multiple unit train) in 1983 travelling towards Cambridge from Norwich, it is worth noting how much of the passing scene has changed over the last 25 years since this short film was made.

  • It's part of the incidental music from the ancient black & white tv series "Robinson Crusoe"!

  • looks like the train is crying when it pulls into the station, how apt with the music!! Excellent vid!

  • could somebody tell what the music is? It rings a bell!! Thanks

  • On thinking about it, I would have taken the photographs of the crossing some time between summer 1987 and autumn 1988.

  • Another interesting point about Browick Rd is that the gate which closed across the tracks on the Norwich side of the crossing (as rail traffic would perceive it) was shorter than the distance it had to cover due to the angled nature of the crossing.

  • Sounds more like it to me. I remember very well the new junction with the A11 bypass being built at Hethersett which meant that the road bridged the line rather than crossing on the level at the station. Again, I can remember waiting at the gates there when in the car with my parents. I also took photos there.

  • hmm I do see your point. The one thing that makes me wonder if 1983 is the actual year of this vid is the colour light on the down line just after the level crossing (W25 I believe). I think, but don't quote me on this that the signal in question was installed as part of the resignalling at Norwich in 1986 and the closure of Hethersett signalbox, therefore it surely shouldn't be there on a video from 1983??

  • I really don't understand this! I was born in 1980 and, as a small child, my mum used to drive me to Wymondham to the supermarket there (Gateway as it was then) along that road. We can both remember waiting there for the gates to be re-opened! Also, as a child I was mad about crossings and the railway system, and used to take photos of local crossings with my mum's old Kodak Instamatic. I have photos I took from here, Keswick and Hethersett in 1986/7, and this was definitely manual.

  • I am currently a signaller at a box on this line and have worked Wymondham South Junction a few times. Browick Road AHBC is seen at 0:58 in the video as this was installed in the 1970's so is pretty much the same as today. The Manually worked gates at the start of the video are in fact those at Spinks lane UWC. Nowadays spinks lane simply has Miniature Red/Green warning lights.

  • I don't understand this - I have photos I took as a level-crossing-obsessed kid in 1987 of the crossing over Browick Road (0:58 in the video) and it still had the manual gates, yet in this 1983 video, it's an automatic half-barrier type as now.
