The idea to build a replica Vickers Vimy sprung from the fertile mind of Peter McMillan. He along with Lang Kidby flew it from Brooklands to Australia in 1994. Full details of this and its other historical flights can be found at vimy.org

The aircraft is now operated by the Brooklands Museum Trust, with the assistance of Dunsfold Park and a team of enthusiastic volunteers. See brooklandsmuseum.com

This short clip shows the first flight since 2005 which took place on the 19th March 2008 from near the Top Gear test site at Dunsfold

  • Wonderful video! So is this one still flying? The museum website says it has been retired..

  • @JorisKoolen It is indeed (at least for the moment). If you go to my 'Aviation Playlist' at vvvvvv, andysvideo, com (Sorry UTube wont let me put the full link) you can see its first and last UK flights and us transporting it by road into the Museum site.

  • i only complain the modern panel inside the plane. This is wonderful anyway.. The most beautiful of the bomber.... The sound. simply amazing!. Love the low pass

  • I suspect it would have been imposable to get the permissions needed to fly to Australia, without the modern equipment

  • It did take off from Dunsfold, because at the time it was stored there (in the top gear hanger).

It was up for about 25 mins and then landed again. In between it did do one low pass of the main runway and that would have looked like a touch and go from outside.

    Regards Andy

  • Cool project! Are there any originals left in the world?

  • When will You Tube allow HDV. This is good but the one you posted on Vimeo in HDV is fantastic. I bet they were bloody cold up there in the clouds though!

  • That's a rather unique aircraft. The nose is a rather odd shape; could we call this the "Flying Caravan"?

  • @andysvideo That's great to hear! Brooklands looks like a place I should visit the next time I'm in the UK. How often can the Vimy be seen flying? It's hard to find information on the museum website.

  • @andysvideo Correct. At least the Chief Pilot and primary pilot on the Atlantic crossing, Mark Rebholz, received a (vintage) Navigator's rating to include sextant navigation to create as authentic of a trans-Atlantic experience as possible. Unfortunately, most of the flight was hard IFR, so instrumentation was necessary. Steve Fossett was co-pilot on that trip. They also received permissions to land on the Connemara Golf Course to land on a fairway that is on the original (bog) landing site.

  • @boleynali Orenda V8 engines. First ones were Chevy V8's, then BMW V 12's prior to the Orenda's

  • @r32adt3db At the London Science Museum and the Royal Air Force Museum. Another replica resides in Australia.

  • looks and sounds awesome..glad u didn,t let clarkson near it..what engines r u using in her.

  • Thanks for the posting. Now that is a beautiful thing!

  • nice repro that accounts for the modern avionics .
