The PlexMark® Renal Biomarker from Life Technologies utilizes a noninvasive urine based assay to achieve sensitive and specific detection of IP-10, MIG, and OPG with results in less than 5 hours.

Properly functioning kidneys are required to sustain human life.

For over 30,000 individuals each year, kidney damage results in the need to replace the defective organ with a transplanted kidney.

Tissue and antibody testing is performed to match the donor and recipient as closely as possible.

However, it is very unlikely that a match will be perfect, even if from a close relative. When there is a mismatch, the body will mount an immune response against the transplanted organ.

The cells of the immune system sense the mismatched kidney. When they do, the cells begin to secrete small protein messengers called chemokines.

Release of chemokines is one of the earliest detectable reactions associated with kidney damage. The role of chemokines is to recruit and activate more immune system cells, which can eventually result in kidney damage and rejection.

Once the chemokines are released, they filter through and deposit in the urine.

We can collect the urine and test it for the presence of chemokines, which are indicators of immunologically-based kidney damage.

The PlexMark test is used in the laboratory to quickly identify and measure their amounts in urine.

It uses advanced technology, where the chemokines are visualized by a series of specific molecular binding reactions. These reactions occur on a micro bead, which binds the chemokines. Additional steps result in the attachment of a fluorescent molecule to positive beads

When the beads are illuminated with a laser, positive beads give off a bright light signal.

At the end of the test, the positive beads are counted by a computer, classified as to the chemokine detected plus its concentration, and the result is provided.

PlexMark® Renal Biomarker Panel Assay can provide rapid, sensitive results when timing is critical. To learn more, please visit the Invitrogen website at http://www.lifetechnologies.com/plexmark
