Heather Mills Investigates the Farrowing Crate

Filmed in March 2007, Heather Mills tells campaigning farmed animal welfare group, Viva!, why she believes that the farrowing crate is one of factory farming's worst hidden horrors. The film also shows her taking part in covert undercover filming on a UK pig farm, and also contains footage from pig units from around Britain.

PART ONE

Farrowing crates are not about protecting piglets - they are about protecting profits. Piglet mortality in the UK is already very high - at around 11 per cent - despite the use of farrowing crates. In the wild, sows do not crush their piglets because they build nests out of twigs and leaves which protect them. Piglet mortality is also lower on outdoor units - but that costs more money.

Are you saying that if that pig was in the wild she would kill them by rolling on them? Uh WTF A species like any other that does nothing but to keep a species alive and safe does that? whether the sows rolls over and squashes the piglets or not who are you to decide to cage her? It's clearly not humane even some bedding wouldnt go a miss. you just need to imagine yourself in that situation, stuck in a cage so you can barely move, with nothing but cold hard concrete underneath you and big sores and abcesses on you that no one cares about and wont help you. all i can say ''kdleal'' is that if you have raised pigs i hope it wasnt like this.

I do not condone animal abuse, but I know that a sow that is allowed to give birth freely is just as likely to lay on a piglet. Baby pigs want to suckle from the sow. Sow's are not smart enough to realize that a baby pig is under them. They lay down and can crush them. I'm sorry but that is what happens sometimes. Doesn't matter if they are in a crate or not. This is not animal abuse. If anything, the crate protects them from being layed on.

this pisses me off. wat they dont show is the sows/gilts who try and eat their babies. or the fact that they have the ability to eat or drink wenever they want. also they arent in the crates for months on end they are just in the crates until the pigs can be weaned
