This project for Downtown Oakville was completed as a senior study project at the University of Waterloo. The goal was to inspire the Town of Oakville to re-imagine their Downtown as an even better and more successful place. It consists of a Public Realm Vision that enhances the existing street network, open spaces and builds on the strong identity of Downtown Oakville. The framework was presented to Oakville staff on April 15, 2011.
Our vision is to create a new link from the heart of Downtown Oakville at Towne Square to 16 mile Creek. Water and the natural features that surround Downtown will gain a presence within the new Square and pedestrian street on George, contributing to the overall ambiance which already exists.
The space will draw people northward, and transform the way people think about Downtown. From the current perception of Downtown as a linear street, it will become an entire vibrant district. The new open space network will extend the success of Lakeshore, acting as a catalyst to achieve the fullest potential of the streets surrounding it.
A bike network will run along Church St, creating a safe and enjoyable way for bicyclists to access the downtown and providing a new way for families to experience the Downtown. Lakeshore Rd will be transformed into a vibrant pedestrian environment that is a place for people, and that allows free movement for all transportation modes.
The flexibility of the space allows it to adapt for the changing seasons, creating more opportunity for special events and everyday functioning of business and leisure.
