And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
Revelation 12:1-2
The Woman And
The Red Dragon
The woman is described as being clothed in the sun, with the moon under her feet and wearing a crown with twelve stars. This vision is similar to the interpretation of Joseph's dream in Genesis 37. In his dream the sun represented his father, the moon his mother, the twelve stars the number of his brothers including himself. This same symbolism can be used to identify the woman clothed with the sun. The woman in question in John's vision is the British monarch Queen Victoria (1837-1901), who reigned for 64 years. The sun representative of her father was Edward Duke of Kent and the moon representative of her mother was Victoria Saxe-Coberg. The twelve stars in the crown represent her cousins, uncles and aunts including Victoria herself. These relations were the surviving descendents of her grandfather George III (1738-1820) and these include Ernest Augustus (d.1851), George King of Hanover (d.1866), Augustus Fredrick (d.1843) Augustus Fredrick d'Este (d.1848), Augusta Emma D'Este (d.1866), Adolphus Fredrick (d.1850), George Duke of Cambridge (d.1904), Augusta Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (d.1916), Mary Adelaide, Duchess of Teck (d.1897), Mary (d.1857) and Sophia (d.1848). These being Victoria's only paternal relations alive at the time to witness the birth of the Queen's first son and heir Edward VII (1841-1910).
