fly it over Nam to say " hey remember me?"

My dad flew the AD-3 Skyraider in Korea. He flew off the deck of the Bon Homme Richard CV-31. VA-923 was his squadron. He was the squadron XO. He loved that plane. I remember him saying that plane would "climb like a homesick angel."

That looks like an absolute blast to fly.

@valcan321 Thank you.

@mwp62 Well the engine was originaly from the the B-29 the A-1 used the same engine as it was being developed around the end of the war. Over time the engines were upgraded i believe as were several other features. I'm pretty sure a WW2 mechanic would feel just fine with the A-1 through out its life except for the electronics.

@valcan321 Thank you. Did they continue to use that same type of engine on the Skyraider right into and through its career in Vietnam? If so, did they salvage and use engines from WW2 era B-29's or did they manufacture new ones based on the old design. Were there modern updates added to the engine as time went by or did they remain a design that would be familiar to a WW2 era mechanic?
-
@mwp62 No not really the engine was actucally the same as the B-29 engines almost 3,000hp. Could lift its own weight in bombs.

What a wonderful, elegant, and practical aircraft. May sound silly but it makes me think that if we didn't have A-10's, we'd stll be using Skyraiders to this day in Afghanistan!

It doesn't look like it needs very much run way in order to take off.

OK, I LOVE any 50's Blue Navy airplane and the Skyraider is one of my favs, HOWEVER, LOOSE the first 6 minutes of this video. If you want to watch it, jump to the 6 minute mark and don't waste your time - or go get some coffee and come back. Beautiful airplane.

HobbyMaster has a 1/72 diecast model of this very aircraft.............

What an amazing aircraft. Thank-you for posting this film. (Glad you didn't let lack of a tripod deter you filming!!)
isn't it called the A-1 Skyraider?

AD is the original designations from the 50's when the paint job is suppose to portray. A-1 wasn't used until the 60's during the Vietnam war.
