always thought that up till 0:48 / the first motive, sounds like Bartok's music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste... am I alone?!

According to some books I've read, he began composition at 16, and of course completed it at 19. How much was written at which age and at whether he conceived of what he was writing as a symphony from the beginning or was just sketching out some ideas for another composition at first, I have no clue.

He wrote it at age 19 exactly. In my opinion, one of the greatest musical minds (if not the greatest) ever. His mind was unique from any other musical master. He's right up there with the very best.
