@a330ftw To be honest I have no idea of the overall cost, I never really kept a record. Its a mediterranean type climate here, so doesn't get really cold often. Occasionally I will lose a few juveniles if we get a sudden cold snap. The birds adjust over time and breed a stronger strain of offspring. I gave up on Gouldians though, they cant handle the cold snaps.

@SpineDaz this is awesome! how much did it cost to build, and how u keep them warm???
-
@DeVinE696 Wasnt too difficult. Few posts, some mesh and bit of thinking and muscle. I think it looks more complicated to build than it actually was.

wow how did u make that??

i agree, that aviary is amazing. what type of finches do you keep?
Ok, that makes sense. You are lucky that you don't have rats, they decimated a friend's softballs a few years ago. Cheers.

@Panama0810 Yeah, lets hope I never get rats. I dont even want to think about the consequences of that. My uncle had his birds decimated by rats as well. He cant get rid of them. Bird keeping is a series of triumphs and disasters.

Hi, love your aviary. Just wondering how you keep Vermin like rats and mice out. Did you have to dig a deep trench around the perimeter?.

@Panama0810 Really haven,t had much problems with vermin. Had mice a couple of times over the last ten years, never rats. I never dug a deep trench. I figured there was no realistic way of keeping mice out. Seed is only found at one part of the aviary, so mice focus there attention on that spot. First sign of mice, I set traps in the aviary and place a plastic container on top with a small hole that only the mice can fit through. Works well. Get on top of them before they can breed up.
