Lincoln was a liberal.

Theres a misunderstanding here. Lincoln had the party name republican but the name and party policies back then and even just 100 years ago was nearly the reverse of what it is today. He was even for big government.

Its convenient for the repubs to be able to call his name but it only works because few people know the history of the 2 parties.
