Winner of the Prestigious Innovations in American Government Award
On September 9, 2008, the Ash Institutes Innovations in American Government Award Program at Harvard Universitys Kennedy School announced its 2008 winners, including the Volpe Center's Global Maritime Domain Awareness Program team, which is honored for its accomplishments in improving safety and economic stability in the global seas.
The award, considered to be the highest award in government, recognizes and promotes excellence and creativity in the public sector by selecting concrete examples of how government addresses the nations most pressing public concerns and improves the quality of life of its citizens.
To enhance Maritime Domain Awareness, the Volpe Center developed the Maritime Safety and Security Information System, an internet based system that consolidates vessel position data from numerous international networks and displays in real time the movement of over 10,000 vessels worldwide.
The importance of global situational awareness for safety, security, and commerce is understood at all levels of government. President George W. Bush stressed that the heart of the Maritime Domain Awareness program is accurate information, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance of all vessels, cargo, and people extending well beyond our traditional maritime boundaries.
