U.S. Air Force Special Film Project 1236, "SAC Command Post," n.d, Produced by Air Force Audio Visual Service (Military Airlift Command), 1365th Photo Squadron
Air Force Index Card
Source: National Archives, Motion Pictures Unit, Record Group 342

Very little information is currently available about the production of "SAC Command Post" by the the 1365th Photo Squadron, and no evidence has surfaced that it was ever shown. The film provides a detailed picture of the Strategic Air Command's command-and-control system lodged in the lower levels of SAC headquarters at Offutt Air Force Base, near Omaha, Nebraska. Describing tight civilian control over decisions to use nuclear weapons, the film emphasizes SAC's place in the chain of command and the mechanisms for preventing the "unauthorized launch" of bombers and missiles that could start a nuclear war.

  • Glad to have been apart of this great command. Spent half my 20 year career in SAC as an Aircraft Crew Chief on SAC aircraft.Long hours, hardwork, and working in Sub Zero temps. That is what is called serving your country. No regrets.

  • Alot of this is true, I worked with Strategic Air Command in the 70's, 80's. I'm glad we never had to launch our B-52s.

  • @rubbing2001 being that you have worked with SAC, I know that this question is going to be `silly' so to speak. I was just wondering what your perspective is about the following ? Due to the recent reports from the past few years, Russia is refurbishing and restocking the BM inventory, both mobile & silo based with modified Topol-types that have the ability to avoid any type of ABM system. It concerns me somewhat, from a strategic standpoint, that is.

  • It does an old SAC crewdog's heart good to see this. B-52G Instructor gunner '82-'86--Grand Forks AFB 46 BMS/Mather AFB 441st BMS. Loved flying, hated alert. Any crew chiefs who read this: Thank you for keeping us safe!

  • I was an AF Security Policeman in SAC from 1983-1988; SAC got the shit done without all of the stinking bureaucracy and political correctness like there is now. Even though I'm a Christian, I still think we should have nuked all the assholes, and let God sort them out, IMHO.

  • Thank you for posting.....As a child in the 1960's I do remember the weekly testing of the local air raid sirens although I really had no idea what it all meant. Now in my 40's I've come to realize how much time, effort and self-sacrifice went into keeping me safe while I played pickup games of baseball, football and hockey with my friends. God bless all that served and continue to serve. Sincere thanks.
