Handel, the Entertainer - part 1
Something about Handel's operas, the context of the composer's overall operatic output and achievement.
A film by Reiner E. Moritz
The film contents excerpts from some Handel´s operas: Rinaldo, Giulio Cesar in Egipt, Xerxes, Agippina, Ariodante.

  • Very good documentary. The excerpt from the start of the film is from which opera?

  • In the beginning is from " Rinaldo", but the whole documentary has excerpts from Rinaldo, Giulio Cesar in Egipt, Xerxes, Agippina, Ariodante.

  • I like his phrase "Bach is music for the Gods, and Handel is music for mankind ... I'm a person and I can relate much more directly to Handel, it's music for human beings".

You hit the nail on the head, Sir Peter!

  • I don't know if Bach is music for Gods. I my opinion Bach is more music for brain, for the intellect. And Handel for the soul, or for the ears.

  • Handel and Bach, are equal in that they are incomparable.

  • Me podrian decir la soprano che canta lascia ch'io pianga, como se llama, gracias

  • I saw documentarys about both composers. Bach and Handel were different in one thing: Bach was a much more better instrumentalist. In the baroque time it was "on vogue" to play duells on the hapsicord. Handel was in this battle: He answered the accurcy of playing of his challenger with melodic playing. Bach was the servant who should tune the hapsicord - while tuning and playing - the challengers had to fly! Both composers were great and it would be a lost to the world if they were never born.

  • Such great music, yet such horrific stagings!

  • I agree, Bach's (rather strict nordic style) is for the brain. And his genius can probably never be overestimated.

BUT I personally am rather touched by Italian music drama and human emotions/conflicts (I mean human beings plus Greek myth Gods, who have as well very human character traits, haha). So Handel appeals more to me.
