i once caught a mantis and tied a string around its neck and kept it for a good while before it gnawed its way out of it and escaped

Heck, if people are worried abt praying mantids, carry them into the garden. I've watched them let aphids crawl onto their legs, then eat the aphids like they were corn on the cob. Don't kill the praying mantis, you uneducated mobs! Geez, as a girl growing up I saw a lot of girls (& guys) freak out over GOOD creatures & kill them. Sad! Now, a factoid to take home: Praying mantises are the only insects that can move their head like a human--up, down, left, & right.

Praying mantises kill humming birds. It has been filmed several times. Kill the mantis if you like those little birds.
