Recorded on April 27, 2008 The last 48 hours of emotional highs and lows have been exhausting.
The weekend got off to a fun start when Katelyn and Isabella got to meet their new sister in Katie's hospital room. The baby immediately captured Isabella's attention and she began showing off the baby to everyone who stopped by the room.
Katelyn was shy at first but warmed up to her new little sister. After sitting next to her for a couple of minutes Katelyn said, "She's so cute." Both big sisters went home happy Saturday evening after giving their new sister a good night kiss. Unfortunately the girls didn't get to see Sara on Sunday.
Sometime Saturday night Sara stopped taking food. Early Sunday morning she was throwing up. By 8 AM nurses had taken Sara to the neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital. At 10 AM Katie and I walked Sara with the team of nurses down to the operating room. An x-ray had revealed an obstruction in Sara's intestines and the surgeon said he needed to operate as soon as possible to find out what was going wrong. During a 90-minute surgery the surgeon managed to remove the blockage and verify that the digestive system had formed correctly. The doctor took several samples to biopsy. Those samples may determine what caused the blockage. I am restraining myself by NOT searching the Internet for more information on a short list of generic diseases that could have caused the blockage in a 3-day-old baby. Tests will determine if Sara has one of these diseases. Sara is back in the NICU and now has an inch long incision on her belly. She's on pain medication and has been sleeping a lot. Monday the doctors will decide if she is strong enough to be fed. Tuesday we expect to get the test results back. Either way Sara will be at the hospital several more days. Physically Katie is doing great. She is up and walking around the hospital. We are thankful Sara's problem was caught in the hospital and not after we took her home. We are thankful the doctors moved quickly. We are thankful Sara is surrounded at all times by a team of caring people. I'll keep you posted on developments when they happen. Positive thoughts and prayers for Sara are welcome.
