The Governor-General's proclamation being read by the New Zealand Herald of Arms Extraordinary (Philip O'Shea) and witnessed by the Clerk of the House (Mary Harris), the Deputy Clerk of the House (Debra Angus), and the Clerk Assistant House Services (Fay Paterson).

Only the Governor-General has the power to dissolve Parliament; the House cannot do so itself.

The dissolution of Parliament triggers the process leading to the holding of the general election.

The ceremony took place on 20 October 2011 on the steps of Parliament House New Zealand.
