The Bat (1926) is a silent film based on the 1920 hit Broadway play by Mary Roberts Rinehart and Avery Hopwood, directed by Roland West and starring Jack Pickford and Louise Fazenda. The story takes place in an old mansion, where people look for hidden loot while a caped killer (nicknamed "The Bat") murders them one by one. The film was rediscovered after being thought to have been a lost film for many years.
Director Roland West remade his film four years later as The Bat Whispers (1930), with Chester Morris and Una Merkel. A 1959 remake, The Bat, starred Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead.

Comic-book creator Bob Kane said in his autobiography that the villain of the 1930 film was an inspiration for his character Batman.

  • why no music?

  • @ImpressionisticDesir Does 'silent movie' mean anything to you? Just saying.

  • @ArtFilmsAnimation

Did you know this movie has music?

If it played in a big theater he was music specifically written for this movie.

And if it played in a small theater a guy on a piano played a list of music until the film was over.

I am a film student, an know a lot about silent films, and they're not meant to be truly silent

  • @ImpressionisticDesir Silent movies have different sound tracks... this was done because cinemas wanted to 'fill the silence'... if you know what i mean.. But The Bat' is truly a silent film. Whereas a lot of silent films usually have music or some sort of score slapped on them (and were supposed to have live accompaniment when on their original theatrical runs), this one has nothing. So bear that in mind while watching The Bat.'

    You haven't done your homework...

  • My Gosh! I've wanted to see this lost film for 50 years! Thank you for putting this up; do you know where and how they rediscovered this treasure? Gosh!

  • The villian may have inspired Batman, but the maid inspired Alice from The Brady Bunch.

  • Louise Fazenda is amazing in this film.

  • @ArtFilmsAnimation I think i'll just put a fitting CD on my Mac as I watch it
