Herreshoff S Boat Dilemma (built in 1928) sailing near the Throgs Neck Bridge on Long Island Sound in September, 2008. Gentle breeze of 8-9 knots. There is a fleet of these boats that race in the Westchester/Long Island area. See website http://www.herreshoff-s-wlis.org

  • Hi 19keel25,

Actually, we tacked further upwind upon reaching the bouy and sailed underneath the Throgs Neck Bridge.

Almost all of the hardware on her is original. Look for a new post soon of a friend of ours on another S-boat in 30 knots of wind.

  • I love those self tacking jibs with a boom on the foot , look at that , like a board , 100% efficient , safe , controlable , easy to reef - super !

  • We enjoyed sailing our 505 on the same course as the S Boats in May. I have never sailed one, but have sailed a gaff-rigged design from somewhat the same period perhaps a bit older)--the Winter Harbor Knockabout. To me, there are really two totally great forms of sailing: blasting around in a dinghy--especially a fast one, and sailing a proper wooden boat, preferably with lots of bronze.

  • I just saw "Allegro" in a Columbus Day race vid. Sailing like a champ!!

  • Debating whether to jybe or not when you go around the bouy that's ahead?? Love the original halyard winch.

  • What is the dilemma? It seems to be sailing very well.
