The Vale of Rheidol Railway is one of the Great Little Trains of Wales and was the last steam railway owned by British Rail until it was privatised in 1989.

Trains depart from the centre of the resort town of Aberystwyth on the Cambrian coast.

The 11¾ mile journey between Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge takes approximately one hour in each direction as the train overcomes a height difference of over 600ft, affording superb views of the Rheidol Valley.

We visited in July 2009 and brought back these pictures; even the damp weather couldn't detract from the beauty of this line.

Like most of these preserved railways, it is run almost entirely by volunteers, without whom, this and many railways like it, would not exist for our pleasure and education.

This is No. 2 in the "Great Little Trains of Wales" series. Please do comment if you wish.
