Clarification of CIMT vs. Exracranial cerebrovascular arterial ultrasound(traditional carotid ultrasound)
Medicare will pay for a carotid ultrasound if patient has neurological symptoms or a bruit. Thus this is the first test to do in a high risk patient or a patient over 70 years old or having a carotid bruit.
After doing this test if the blockage or stenosis is less than 9% or zero then the patient might go on to get a CIMT as insurance usually does not pay for this.
