Leaders of the ASEAN member states convened for the summit retreat to continue the extensive discussions on the progress and direction of their future cooperation as well as prepare for the meetings with dialogue partners.

Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Enrique Manalo is the Philippine representative during the retreat.

The summit's official theme, Enhancing Connectivity, Empowering Peoples, underscores the significance of an ASEAN community that is one in promptly addressing regional challenges and connecting the region in terms of infrastructure and trade, education and culture, and the people.

The 10 ASEAN leaders are set to adopt four important documents after the summit closes on the 25th of October. These are the Cha-am Hua Declaration on the Inauguration of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights, Cha-am Hua Hin Declaration on Strengthening Cooperation in Education to Achieve an ASEAN Caring and Sharing Community, ASEAN Leaders' Statement on ASEAN Connectivity and a joint statement on Climate Change
