White working class children are failing at school. In this programme, we explore the issue and

offer a provocative view of where our schools are going wrong.

It's an issue that few in education are willing to acknowledge, but white working class girls

and boys are the worst performing groups in secondary education.

Former Teacher of the Year Philip Beadle believes that fundamental change is needed urgently if

these children are to reach their full potential.

Elsewhere, the former head of a leading London comprehensive explains how the language in which

teachers speak can often undermine the confidence of this social group.

Finally, the working class head of a Dagenham comprehensive describes the radical changes that

he has introduced to help turn his school around.

  • He is not implying they are stupid. He is saying that they have a different culture (ie one that has little respect for m/c authority). Which is a fair point.
