I checked wikipedia there was three SCIENTIFIC explanations (other than humanoid baabaa) for these lights.

It didn't look like any sort of craft to me. More like some new unknown optical phenomena. Interesting, but definetly not humanoids.

The craft that seemed to be collecting something was a soul eater. It comes intermittently when enough people have died and enough soul energy has collected in one spot. It collects that energy and uses it to power the mother ship. some go on to another plane or dimension, but those who are weighted down with anger or hate cannot transcend and the ships collect that energy and burn it like gasoline.
