Great surf movie. I saw it on Showtime (believe it or not) in the late 70's.
Lee Purcell was always freaking hot!

I guess you could say this movie is a favorite of mine..and yet, I've never seen it. I'm acquainted with the story because I read the book in high school numerous times. It was a favorite of mine and I still have that copy. Growing up in the Mid-west, I never had the chance to ride a wave until I was in my mid thirties in Florida. Some surfers suggested boogie boarding and taught me the basics. I finally experienced the sensation and enjoyed it.

@msinthrop I was an extra in the crowd scene inside the induction center, the scene with Robert Englund.
It isn't just a "surf movie"... it's a wonderful elegy about friendship and youth. Anyway the surf scenes are very beautiful.
Great movie.

This brilliant time piece flew 6 miles over the moron public's head. It tanked at the box office but it remains as the best "Coming Of Age" film that I've ever seen.
