A fan video for the 1980 version of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," starring David Rintoul and Elizabeth Garvie. Even though the Colin Firth version gets more press, there's a lot of fans of this older version as well—many of us feel it's more faithful to the book. (I love the 1980, 1995 and 2005 versions, though.)

  • It's amazing, most people don't even know about this version of Pride and Prejudice, but I believe it is by far the best! Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul are the best Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy!

  • Couldnt agree more. Best version ever. Anyone who doesn't think so either hasn't read the book or has rather strange tastes

  • By the way, I just watched this whole series on Netflix streaming! So great to see it again.

  • My favorite version by far. David Rintoul played the best Darcy ever. Just wish they would have zoomed in on that final kiss! What a let down :-(

  • love this one too!

  • I, too think this the best P and P made! I very much disliked the later version and could not stand the dry voice of the actress who played Elizabeth in that one.

she seemed stiff and old and very unlike the playful Elizabeth. Garvie was a wonderful Elizabeth! Rintoul was a perfect Darcy. My only disappointment with this version is that it was too short! I wish it was twice a long! Four hours was simply not enough!

  • This is my favorite 'Pride and Prejudice' none other could take the place of this one with David Rintoul and Elizabeth Garvie

  • the best version, the closest to the novel

  • I think Rintoul is perfect as Darcy. He certainly would have been very stiff and supercilious just as Rintoul plays him.he is described that way in the book. Let's remember it was a VERY formal era and he was an arisocrat from one of the most important families in Britain. Firth is probably more attractive to modern tastes but i think his portrayal is less realistic. i always think of Rintoul when I read the book.

  • I too rather love this version and fear it to be under-appreciated. While Rintoul is a bit waxen in sone scenes I think his softening to Elizabeth and eventual delight in her is compelling for that reason.

  • Agree! Watched it when it was shown in Singapore in 1981 and never forgot both lead actor & actress. I think it is so far the best version todate. Rest of cast was also wonderful. Elizabeth Garvie had such expressive eyes and lively expression, which perfectly personified E Bennett's vivaciousness. And my friends swooned over D Rintoul's Mr Darcy. Wonder where I can get the DVD for this version?

  • I finally saw this version & disagree that it is the best. I find Rintoul's Darcy flat, wearing one expression most of the time. I don't think Austen portrayed him as such a caricature. Firth supplies a depth of emotions & reactions, a complexity missing in this version,That said, this is far better than the 2005 movie which other than the settings is painful to watch.
