After reading "Roarr-Calder's Circus," by Maira Kalman, Bryan and Robert's first graders created their own circus using the same materials that Alexander Calder (1898-1976) used--cork, wire, fabric, wool, paper and clay. They handcrafted tight-rope walkers, a belly dancer, lions, birds and acrobats. The Big Top was a parachute suspended from the ceiling. In preparation for the animated film, kindergartners who "visited the circus" were invited to make animal sounds for the sound track.
