Yeah, I agree....I feel that Dave got better as a songwriter over the years in terms of his arrangements, but his voice on the early recordings was so organic.....I wish he could/would capture that again. I still love everything he and the band does now-a-days, but his voice on the earlier recordings does seem "free-er", if that makes sense. But perhaps, that's just the natural growth of a musician. Perhaps the past, although awesome, isn't necessarily better than the present.
