Olibawler.. You are a troll. Nikons have there own problems except one difference. Nikons are three times the cost in repair and hardware. But not three times the performance. Put a Carl Zeiss lens on any of the lower end Sony Alphas and they will outperform the shitty overpriced Nikon. The industry is chasing Sony's tail right now. So troll somewhere else.

That sound scared the shit out of me 0.0"

I have the same problem, this is not gears, this is AF's motor doesn't stop spining when af gets the largest amount. I think there are problems with contacts... Anyway it's TERRIBLE AND IRRITATING!!!
-
clean metal gears, that's what i do..focus gears broke and stuck in the metal gear :)
-
your problem is that you have a sony... buy a nikon.

If you are on budget and planning to get a new camera, then get it, specially from DSLR brands from Canon or Nikon. Don't spend money trying to repair it because eventually the camera will start failing. It happened to me.

I have to say thats why you stick to the proven brands. Ive never felt Sony was a trusted SLR camera maker

Same problem with the lens of a friend, and now my own, this lens sucks!
-
mine sounds the same...:(
how did you get it fixed for free ?
-
Electronics damaged lens and subsequently broken off tooth crown Focus ... only to use for manual focus. standard design flaws of these models
Sounds like part of the internal gears have some how been stripped.

@Katalyzt How? and what do you mean with that? The screw is somehow jammed..

Try both these things: Leave, or set the main mode dial to P then set the lens focus switch located on the left side of the camera to MF, and manually spin to focus ring. Or take the lens completely off and manually spin the focus ring to see/feel/hear if it does the same thing when not mounted on the camera.

@Katalyzt I've done that.. its kinda hard to explain.. but everything goes smooth (when i turn the focus ring) until a certain point where it 'clicks'' very hard, you have to use some force to turn it beyond that point..

At that point is where it sounds like part of the internal gears(the teeth on gears) have been stripped. If it(the lens) is still under warranty then I suggest that you have it replaced.
