Ma Yan was born into a life of grinding poverty in rural China. She lived on a bowl of rice a day. But she loved to study and never gave up her dreams of achieving more. When she was 13, she started writing a diary, pouring into it all her hopes for her future.
you really are un educated arnt you, i have the book and that wasnt her house at first, her family lived in a small 'hut' like shake and about seven people slept in a bed which covered half of the room

Yeah after that french journalist publish her diary she did get some of the copyright stuffs to furnish her family a better and more liveable home alongside with allowing her eat vegetables everyday instead of only a bowl of rice. What we're seeing now in this report is her situation now, which is greatly improved...

I am very glad to have found this video and part 2. I am jut about to begin a term's work with my students (I teach Chinese in country Australia) about Ma Yan and school life in China in general. I"m going to read her diary to them over the term. These videos will be a great introduction.
@scottpiusz how do you know the bowl of rice part if crap? Have you read the book?

Interesting story yes. The bowl of rice part is crap though. Her home looks pretty nice compared to others in China.

Wow. I had no idea Ningxia province was one of the Chinese provinces with a large Muslim population.
It was lovely seeing the countryside. Great reporting and filming, Al Jazeera.
