LUIS LEAL: A JOURNEY OF 100 YEARS is a documentary film directed and edited by Janette Garcia, highlighting the accomplishments of Professor Luis Leal, a renowned scholar who has lived 101 years. Dr. Leal's accomplishments include serving heroically in World War II, teaching for more than 50 years at prestigious universities, publishing numerous books and articles, and being awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle in 1991 from the Mexican government and the National Medal for the Humanities by President Clinton in 1997 for his distinguished scholarly work. He is an internationally recognized scholar of Mexican, Chicano and Latin American literature.
The film consists of a series of "chapters" in the life of
Dr. Leal: his childhood in Mexico, college years in the United States, marriage to Gladys Leal, service in World War II, and his publishing and teaching career. It features interviews with Professor Leal's previous students as well as interviews with his colleagues and other key people who have played an important role in his life. UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang is featured in the film as is Congresswoman Lois Capps and Supervisor Salud Carbajal.
Professor Leal has touched the lives of young and old, famous and
humble, Nobel Prize winners such as Octavio Paz as well as other
well-known poets, novelists, and playwrights. He is a marvelous,
inspirational role model for children, teenagers, and adults of all
ages. The film captures in 56 minutes the splendid, intellectually rich life of a scholar and a gentleman.
The film also features an original soundtrack by guitarist Tony Ybarra.
