Highlights from the 1978 premiere telecast of Pro Bowlers Tour. In Match 1, Joe Nuzzo faces Gary Dickinson. The winner advances to meet 3 seed Larry Gray, who bowled league at Gable House, the host venue for the Lite Classic. The winner of that second match would advance to meet 2 seed Mark Roth, with the winner advancing to meet tournament leader Lee Taylor. These highlights are all I kept from this tournament. Note that all the players in the field, except Roth, were playing the classic PBA "fallback" shot, but even deeper inside at the arrows than was usually seen back then, making for some rather unusual (dead) pin action. Roth, with his power ball, revolutionary at the time, was the only player who could overpower the lanes.

Chris Schenkel on play-by-play. Nelson Burton, Jr. on color.

January 7, 1978. Gable House, Torrence, CA.

  • great video as always. How high is the ceiling at Gable House?

  • I don't know how high the ceiling is. But I've never seen masking units like this at any other bowling center. I wonder if they were custom made for Gable House. I also wonder if Gable House is still in existence. It sure looks like a very old bowling center in the videos I have of it, and that was 30-odd years ago.

  • joe nuzzo bowls 3 nights a week at where i bowl at, and the best part is he was helping me out last night, he still shots good, 220 on the shark pattern on mondays

  • @a3fins Joe Nuzzo bowls out of the Youngstown, Ohio area. I'm not too sure about his pro career, I just know that I've bowled a lot of tournaments with him and he is still a very good bowler. Wish I could be more help

  • Who the hell is Joe Nuzzo?

  • @ccastro306 In the red shirt??? Not even close to him...(Art Trask) But I saw where you got the idea from.

  • @BowlingOldies Yes Gable House in Torrance,CA is still going however when the remodeled several years ago they installed Brunswick 2000 masking and rack and hoods (ball return on approach area) and also installed new wood lanes as it was done right before the mass introduction of the synthetic lanes by Brunswick and AMF. This also was the house and pair of lanes Pete McCordic threw a 300 on ABC for $100,000 in 87. The center is owned by Jack Coogan who's son Kevin is a famous Indy car driver...

  • Awsome.

  • around 2:37, is that Art Trask in the front row of the audience?

  • Was Larry Gray wearing his moms wig for this event?

  • Funny thing at the time the Impact ball was a heavy oil ball.
