Just love how he builds up the music to the climax at 9:20...

There ais a sadly growing number of neglected works and compsers-- Carl Nielsen to name one. Almost nobody in music academia knows anything about him. Yet his 6th symphony is a 20th century masterpiece. Now, the governor of California is planning to shut down one of the states best music departments to save money-- Cal State Northridge. Where are we heading here?

I think the entire symphony is wonderful. But if I had to chose a single movement it would be this one, As a San Clemente surfing newspaper used to describe itself "All killer, no filler." That certainly applies here. Not a superfluous bar in it. That's a difficult thing for a composer to pull off for 15 minutes (I know, I've tried it myself), to say nothing of 45. The ending here is just incredible. Hard to imagine anything more tragic in all of music.

This unfairly neglected symphony is indeed a gorgeously tragic work.

And I love the picture (I guess by Arnold Boecklin) too !

Nice try ! But the picture is by Ferdinand Keller another symbolist painter. I would be unfair not tell you that it is called "Boecklin's tomb" !
The best movement of this symphony is its second movement already one Youtube. I suggest you try it : it is breathtaking.
