From the Somali desert to the world's catwalks. When Waris Dirie's DESERT FLOWER appeared in 1998, the world was shocked. The former supermodel tells her breathtaking life story, describing her incredible journey from a nomadic life in the deserts of Somalia to the world's most famous catwalks. This was a dream and a nightmare at the same time. In New York, at the peak of her career, she tells in an interview of the practice of female genital mutilation that she had to suffer when she was five. Waris Dirie decides to end her life as a model and dedicate her life to fighting this archaic ritual.

  • Thanks again for posting this important film

  • I wish there were at least 10 more minutes left, it feels like a forced ending. Nevertheless it was a good film :)

    well done !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • If even one little girl has to undergo this atrocity in even a 'minor' way (talk of 'exaggerations' is mute and meaningless), it is cruel torture in the extreme. These victims are little girls as young as 2 or 3 years. The true innocent's of this world. You Tube has films of this gut-wrenching procedure actually being performed. Watch them, if you can stomach it, and then see if you can call any of it 'exaggeration'.

Education, education, education will stop it. Knowledge is power, spread it

  • the best film !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i wonder whats the reason for the FGC. Besides all of the reasons that were given. i heard that streaching the vulva + is precticed in war conflicted zones. bc in cases of attack and rape of women they may become pregnant and expelled from village. dont know if its true but it maybe. this story was told by one woman from Africa ( i dont know exactly where she was from)

  • With all respect, wouldn't it be difficult for you to know if she's exaggerating her story if your someone from the city and not from the same nomadic people as herself? She's an incredible woman, God truly is using her pain to help other people and she will be blessed. God Bless the people of Somalia and Africa, may Peace rule there. Amen.

  • i luv this movie am a somali women but never was circumsized wich am greatful for

  • @curiousxmirror True. I'm also a Somali woman. And many women in my family and I have not been circumsized (as is with many city people). It is true that the nomads have it the worst( not bashing), as they have the most unsanitary conditions and adhere to strict tradition not to mention the lower education levels vs. the city people in Somalia. This is an issue we need to deal with, and Im against it, but this movie, without a shadow of a doubt, exaggerates beyond belief. Well, it is a movie...

" What you say about how the majority of women not having their clitoris removed shows that you admit it does happen.

When did I say it does not happen? And no, there is no way that WHO could come up with a number like that. Somalia is a freakin warzone. It's considered the most dangerous country right now. The U.N can't even deliver FOOD and AID, how the hell can the WHO come up with statistics?!!?

    It's cowmen logic.

  • @cbluver22

What you say about how the majority of women not having their clitoris removed shows that you admit it does happen. The fact is that few places that have the ability to do this procedure with proper sanitation. Your government is not the only group who worries about the number of women this occurs to, since organizations like WHO (World Health Organization) take statistics, and one I researched found the population of Somalian women to have a 95 % prevalence of Type I and III FGM.

  • @curiousxmirror

Oh please, Somalia has no working government how in the world could they come up wit a statistic like that?? And when did I say that I don't care about it? Your getting to emotional. The problem with movies like this is that they over-exaggerate what really happens. Being a Somali living among Somalis and my country for a while I think I know better.
