2 million people in the Sahelian regions of Chad, where irregular rains in 2009 have caused harvests to fall by 34%, are threatened by the West Africa food crisis. Some women have resorted to digging earth outside their village to find anthills. They dig the mounts to find seeds that worker ants have brought to the queen; seeds that the wind has scattered from the granary or from fields nearby. They need to do this before rains begin in June as waters destroy the anthills.
