  • Don't knock unions - in Sweden EVERYONE including evenmanagement is unionized (Seriously) - and Union reps by law must sit on the company board. It's all non-confrontational, agreed, and protectionist. And no they don't pay super high taxes anymore... Poor Britain and the US, does anyone actually feel like they have job security anymore? A union is NOT a dirty word... get organized....

Embarques-tu?...

  • My dad has always loved Strawbs, and I always knew it. But it wasn't until now I decided to check them out. I completely get why he loves them so much. Strawbs just gained a new fan. I'm so going to ask him to take me to their concert this year.

  • my boss blamed me for something i didnt do, thats why unions rule.

  • @SultanChase Fair enough. In which case, I'd be curious to know how the band members feel nowadays. Anyone got any info?

  • @Taiwanlight Yeah, I saw that. However, last year the Wiki page said the opposite, so it's hard to determine which account is reliable. Also, as I said in my earlier comment, whenever I have heard/read any commentary on the song, a strong point has been made of the supposed satirical, anti-union sentiment.

  • @SultanChase Well, I'm looking at the wikipage right now 'Part of the Union" and it says 'The song was unofficially adopted by the trade union movement, and it is widely considered to be a proud folk anthem for the working man. Although the lyrics may be read as somewhat sarcastically anti-trade union, the members of the band have stated many times that it wasn't meant to be sarcastic or parodic'.

Mind you, Wiki does say it needs a citation for this which is why I said 'for what it's worth'.

  • @Taiwanlight After reading your comment, I went on Wikipedia, but there's no link for the reference. Everything that I had heard/read about the song previously was that it was intended to be satirical, and that the band had a negative view of the British trade unions because of their confrontational policies, and regular strikes.

  • @SultanChase Wikipedia

  • @Taiwanlight Really?
