  • @neveneffect1 - the second pilot is monitoring each of the 2 engines start, watching for signs of smoke, fire or anything else unusual during the start up. Although the pilot does have instruments that should alert him to a potential problem, It's just an extra safety measure as neither the engines nor exhausts can be seen from inside the cockpit. (He's also keeping an eye out for anyone who might be silly enough to wander up behind the aircraft during the start!)
