A traditional folk play for mid-winter. This version is at least 100 years old, and originates in North Nottinghamshire.
Similar dramas occur in the surrounding areas of North Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
These dramas were performed on Christmas Eve or thereabouts by actors known as mummers or guisers. This tradition has roots going back several hundred years. The story is thought to symbolise the dying of the old year in midwinter and the re-birth of the new one with the promise of Spring.
