Gabriel Craig - Pro Bono Jeweler - 2010

Artist Gabriel Craig utilizes performance to connect the world of studio jewelry with the general public. The Pro Bono Jeweler (2008-10) is an ongoing project, which he calls "guerrilla jewelry performances," that originated from a need to reintroduce the craft of jewelry making into the larger public arena. His performances have evolved to ignite creativity in participants, encouraging interest in jewelry not only as a product but also as a practice. This video documents a performance/public intervention that took place on June 19, 2010, in Houston, Texas, in conjunction with the group exhibition Hand+Made: The Performative Impulse in Art and Craft on view at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, May 15-July 25, 2010. Craig was one of 19 artists whose work was featured in the exhibition. Hand+Made: The Performative Impulse in Art and Craft, curated by CAMH curator Valerie Cassel Oliver, explored the innovative means by which artists continue to expand the traditional boundaries of art and craft. Through the integration of performance, the artists featured in the exhibition have broadened the context of craft for contemporary times. The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston presented sculptural objects, environments, and site-specific installations along with photography and video, documenting performances, as well as a series of live performance events.
