sailed on the Achille Lauro to Sydney from Southampton in July 1971 via Malta,Messina,Naples.Genoa ,Tenerife ,Cape Town and Melbourne, fantastic trip for £10! she was a lovely looking ship from any angle although when i was aboard she was in desperate need of repaint.Still have the newsletters issued daily .If she had survived the hijacking and fire she would have ended in the breakers yards in India or China.
I don't see any value in scrapping. To me, a Ocean Liner, even a Cruise Liner & a all purpose Ocean Liner is better off either preserve or sunk. And I say this to all Ocean Liners
Why in the world did the plo order the captain want to do? The Captain should have have say screw you! They didn't have the means of blowing up the Liner.
Wonderful to see this posting , i spent 6 weeks in 1970 on this grand oldlady from perth to southampton , best days of my life , such a shame she went through so much with hi-jacking and two fires before going to sleep on the sea bed ... god bless you achille lauro
Thank you for sharing this wonderful video. It was very nice to se this ship it was one of the last 2 funnels ships left from the golden age of cruising a real gem of a ship wonderful. Thank you so much

I think a "Tall ship" is one with sails and not just a tall ship.

It's sad to admit that Achille Lauro had a histroy of fires. But for me, at least the last fire sank her. That way, she won't be scrapped.

If I was born in 1940, I would sail on Achille Lauro sometime between 1947 & 1994
