Ride on Knoebels Amusement Park's classic wooden rollercoaster The Phoenix - front left seat ride, filmed June 14, 2011 using Flip Video.

Located at Knoebels Amusement Park & Resort in Elysburg, PA.

Originally built as the Rocket in San Antonio, Texas, the ride was moved to Knoebels in 1985 and rechristened the Phoenix. The Phoenix has been listed on many Top 10 roller coaster lists since its arrival.

Designed and built by Herb Schmeck and the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC), the roller coaster operated as "The Rocket" at the Playland Park in San Antonio from 1947 until the park's closure in 1980. At its opening, the Phoenix was hailed as "the largest roller coaster in the world," with 3200 feet of track and 78 foot first hill. Knoebels purchased the ride in 1984 and dismantled it starting in January 1985. As there were no blueprints to work with, each individual board was numbered and catalogued on site. [1]

The restored roller coaster opened at Knoebels on June 15, 1985. It is named after the mythical phoenix bird which rises, reborn, from its own ashes. This effort, the first large-scale wooden roller coaster relocation in many years, helped spark a movement for the restoration and relocation of other roller coasters standing but not operating.

The Phoenix coaster routinely gives a fast ride with many spots where riders experience upwards acceleration, or negative gravity. This floating sensation is known affectionately to coaster enthusiasts as "airtime," and they applaud the coaster as the airtime occurs. Since the inception of the Internet Wood Tracked Roller Coaster Poll, the Phoenix has consistently ranked among the top 10. The Phoenix is an ACE Coaster Landmark[1] and has consistently been ranked at or near #4 for Best Wooden Coaster by Amusement Today magazine's annual Golden Ticket Awards.

  • @Sir1188 Hear, hear! Amazing air-time is what keeps Phoenix near the top of all wooden rollercoaster rankings. Just outstanding!

  • @GangstaBearr22 that my friend, is called air-time

  • I'm 14, and i went on that at night, and i cried cause i almost fell out during the bunny hops. :x

  • @katalinas10 yeah

  • my first ever real roller coaster. i rode when i was about 7 or 8 and i was balling my eyes out after the ride. i finally avenged my childhood at 19 and rode the phoenix a second time, and i loved every minute of it after that :D

  • @MrAmk47cod kinda, but the phoenix is way better, at the end u get lifted out of ur seat

  • i love the phoenix, i live about 15 minutes away from knoebels

  • me and my son went on it and he cried mommy AND HE WAS 8! and he rode it when he was 5 saying AGAIN!

  • @StellarKart66 is that a Tornado>

  • i love knobles cause if you wanna go for your kids and you dont wanna go on any rides you dont have o pay to go in like dorney park its just more money your saving

  • @tslabjr7 Cool! I might just visit.

  • @sportsygirl8 this coaster is way better then comet!

i like knoebles better then hershey!

i am going to knoebles next month. i'll go to hershey when they get what i always wanted. a hyper coaster.

  • @tslabjr7 I've only been on Comet, but I've watched this video and it is a lot like Comet...the more I talk about Comet the more I think about Hershey Park I'm going next month!!!

  • @sportsygirl8 have you been on both?

  • @tslabjr7 That's what I thought and that's why this ride looks a lot like Comet.

  • @MrAmk47cod the phoenix is a figure 8 and is very smoothe and has the best air time around. the comet is a double out and back. it has an extra line of bunny hops. yes more of them, but no. the air time is still better on phoenix.

also the phoenix has a fast crew. they just have buz bars and can get a train in and out of the station in about 30 seconds depending on how fast the people get into the car. i had one station dispatch time at 23 seconds once. the line moves faster on phoenix!

  • @sportsygirl8 yes. and thunderhawk at dorney.

  • Did the Philadelphia Toboggan Company build Comet?

  • @MrAmk47cod It is like Comet almost exactly the same, but there are a little bit of difference! More than likely it was built by the same coaster company. I wish I lived closer to this place! I would so ride Phoenix and Twister. The parks I live close to are Lakemont, Del Grosso, Kennywood, Idlewild, Six Flags America and Hershey Park.

  • this looks like the comet at hershey park. is it exactly the same?
