I switched to ubuntu server, since that not installing any of the server-specific stuff results in a wonderfully stripped down ubuntu installation.

Only the needed componentes were added, such as a light desktop manager, Ingo Molnar's rt kernel and the necessary tools for compiling the latest alsa and wine releases. Without the xserver (window manager, etc.) started, it takes less than 40Mb of memory... :-)

This is a virtual machine booting, it takes more time booting and also the host was running the screen capture utility, which really slows it down even more. In a real machine it boots in about half of the time. A copy of this virtual partition is now installed on a pen drive which boots on all of my machines, although custom scripting is necessary for optimization on each (pci latencies, specific hardware parameters for the jack server, etc).

Now going for some field testing, vst's that work, alsa, jackdmp and wine latest releases, etc... :-p
