take off all the horisontal ropes, and than tighten the vertical ropes, using your hands (that's tough) os using a stick, making a lever movement. After you've finished the whole circle, you start over with horisontal tuning from the beginning. It's a risky job... the skin may crack. If it does, it was time fot the skin to go... ik it works, you get a great sound again... Good luck!!!

Reason- maybe your djembe isn't from gambia,or wood is to soft.Did you use vertical tightening or only horizontal??? It's very important to tight your djembe with vertical and horizontal lacing.

i have a gambian djembe, but it never sounds like this and sounds crap even though its tuned to the max! any reason?

i don't know triba. I saw those people during my first holiday in the Gambia, and they are playing very well
