Retraining a standardbred to not pace, but canter over poles on the ground, watch all the way to the end, you'll see it done perfectly then!

  • LoL=] Ok...I know that poles are the best thing to do to get a horse to canter nicely especially a "standie" but, what if the horse doesn't even want to go over the poles? I have a standardbred mare that just turned 10 and she absolutely REFUSES to go over poles laying flat on the ground! I would love for her to be a hunter/jumper however, I can't get her to canter in the ring or to jump anything in the arena. She will canter, jump logs, and do whatever I ask as long as it's out in the open?!?!

  • I would walk heer over one pole, she may even jump it..... then walk again the other direction, if you can, put some treats in your pocket!!!! give one to her after she goes over... then trot her over it.... again, she may jump it!!! I know my Aymos did.... try this and get back to me, I am anxious to see how it goes! then we'll talk jumping

  • hi

i have a standardbred pacer and she cant trot properly she is 3 and has only been riden 5 times she is sooo smart but i don't know how to bring her into a proper tort. Should i lunge her or ride over poles?

  • Lunge her, once you see she does it without even thinking about it, tack up and get on her......

  • This is the most willing breed I think I have ever worked with, I am always amazed at how wonderful he is....

  • I have a 13 yo ex pacer. He is so kind, gentle and willing. He was retrained to trot completley, but his canter was only partially done. He paces before he canters. And it is just so freaking fast his canter! I have all his race records as well he was a pretty speedy lil fellow hehe. My trainer and I are starting canter work next week, im nervous haha, im so going to fall off >.<

  • How far apart do you need the poles?

  • Hi,I have a 15 yo off the track Standardbred Mare. She was re-trained but i don't think she was correctly re-trained......When she trots its not a normal trot like you would see and also it's not a pace.......Could it be her trot is just faster then normal? How can i slow it and make it more bouncy thanks!!!!!!!!!!

  • i've been working with a standardbred, its amazing how much poles play into it, 2 days after starting working her over poles she'll now trot without them (still needs some work as she can get quite rushy) and she'll canter over poles (deicided she wanted to canter instead of trot one of our times over it!)

  • wow do i remember that! 2 of my 3 pacers couldn't canter except uphill lol but i loved them for it! lol
