I don't think that Black Sabbath, at least during the fifteen first years of their existence (Ozzy/ Dio-era, 1968 - 1982) can be classified as classic rock. Classic rock has some kind of connection with AOR and pop and is much more commercial, while the essence of hard rock and metal is being unconventional and authentic. So I find the term hard rock/ proto-metal much more fitting.

I believe that Black Sabbath are hard rock/ proto-metal. Metal didn't really exist in 1970 (hence proto-), but Sabbath (and especially guitarist Tony Iommi and his fingertip prosthetics) played a great deal in shaping it. Of course, Dio-era Black Sabbath (1979 - 1982) were metal for sure. When Dio came in the band as a replacement of Ozzy Osbourne he made a lot of crucial changes to their sound.
