  • The miners may have been as deep as 1800 feet. Retreat mining is the practice of recovering coal from mountains previously mined. They use hydraulic supports to stabilize the ceiling. When the mountain shifts they call it "bumping." The practice is dangerous. Crosscut 139 is the area miners were thought to have perished. The mining company had been cited several times before the tragic accident. Though admonished, overall, the company was not held criminally responsible.
