P.S. Always got a real kick out of his bass playing on the kick-off to that classic recording of the "Orange Blossom Special!" Don't think there are many others who could've kicked that off with as much soul and rythm and kept it rock solid all the way through your Uncle Scott's firey rendition of that one! :-) Also, my Dad has always spoken of how he really liked Jimmy's Bass playing on the original recorded version of this song, "The 5 Little Johnson Girls" his bass playing totally drove it !

Hi Laura,
Just read your post for the first time and though it says you posted it 3 years ago, I hope that you might see my message! I just had to let you know that I for one have told many others about how much I liked your Uncle Jimmy's Bass playing! I always said that with the way he slapped that Bass, his "picking hand and wrist" must have been made of rubber!! Don't think I've ever seen a more energetic and limber handed bass player than him!

Early Grand Old Opry performer Pop Stoneman, with his very talented family. A rare and delightful piece of footage. From the 1967 film "Hell On Wheels", starring Marty Robbins. Wonderful. Keep posting.

i was born in kentucky so i can make fun of southern people. the Stonemans were 100% bat-nuts! i love them. so clueless and innocent. check out crazy gold boots! she really has some moves. and Uncle Jimmy plays a mean rock-a-billy style slap bass. not too many bands have the gumption to do a show like this anymore. lots of personality. The mock-u-mentary film 'A Mighty Wind' makes fun of all these style bands in a poignant way. (and if you're southern i doubt you'll know what "poignant" means)

@StevePerrysLady Did Jimmy ever play electric bass?

The 1966 MGM label single of The Five Little Johnson Girls is definitely one of country music's definitive classics. Absolute, utter perfection!

I am one of five Johnson girls. We're from Many, Louisiana and I love your video, but while our daddy wasn't like the dad in the song, he was a strong disiplinarian, which I am thankful for today. He passed in '09 and I miss him dearly. Thanks again and keep making that good music!!!

My name is Laura Stoneman and these very talented people are my aunts, uncles, and my grandpa. Not one person ever mentions how talented my Uncle Jimmy is on the bass. That man really knew how to thump that bass. When he first started playing the bass he played one that my grandpa made and they called it the Whomper because of the sound it made. He was truly marvelous.
