  • Hi. I see you have Solo and Phantom dinghy vids. Can you comment on how the Phantom compares to the Solo by any chance please? I had to skip my Solo which was sad but I didn't like the massive board case and I have an opportunity to perhaps get something better. Also looked at the Supernova if anyone has any comments.

  • @davemakesawave Loved the Solo for some close fleet racing, easy to sail, hard to master, range of boats to buy based on your budget. I love the older Phantoms (before self draining and carbon rigs) nice boat to sail, but need more crew weight than Solo. Modern Phantoms are expensive, but if you have crew weight are current on a great handicap rating. Not sailed a Supernova but something I have considered, great value for money, and reviews suggest its ok. Little chance of class racing.

  • Very interesting to watch. I didn't realise that the 300 was so unstable. It accelerates well though - it looks like very hard work, no time to relax!

I sail a Flying Fifteen and a Comet.

  • @tiposxdiesel I race against a great fleet of FF15's, they look a lot of fun too, and are tough to beat on handicap - guess I need more practice.

  • @bertfrantic Hi. Thanks for reply. I went to see a Phantom and quickly realised it would be too big for my lake at the Cotswold Water park. Have also been told the new Phantoms and the Supernova can't be de-powered because the sails won't stretch which again would't be any good where I sail because we get a huge amount of turbulence and hardly any clean wind. Therefore, I jumped on a wooden Solo a week ago, spent all week modernising the rigging and then fell ill. Hope to sail this weekend.

  • @davemakesawave I've sailed both Solos and Phantoms, both great boats but they are quite different in character. Most Phantoms nowadays are self draining epoxy ships, and are a lot quicker than the old single floor wood boats. As with the RS300 you spend a lot of time kneeling. The Solo is a more traditional "sit in" boat, so tends to be a bit more comfortable to sail. And of course the Phantom has a bigger sail, so you'll be overpowered earlier than in a Solo. Can't comment on the Supernova.

  • @mardibloke very interesting, thanks for the info. Would the old Phantoms be wood? The Solo I had was glass over a wood frame and the frame had rotted, possibly wasn't even all hard wood which makes me wonder about going back to a wood boat; easier to repair in my opinion too. Can't afford what I really want; brand new foam sandwich, sigh.
